We Are Still Waiting for the Rainbow 🌈

The Lighthouse Assessment was released September 2022 following a Historic Preservation Plan in 2020. We are still waiting for word from others regarding their commitment to the future of our Cape Blanco Lighthouse.

In September 2022, a group of preservation specialists came to Cape Blanco to offer their expertise on the deterioration that is happening with the metal and masonry walls. We covered this assessment in our July 2023 Heritage Journal newsletter. Click the PDF on the right to view the article. The challenges facing our lighthouse (including a daily 1/4 mile hike on the lighthouse gate road) didn't deter our docents, and volunteers arrived from as far as Boise, Idaho. We are grateful for our volunteers!

Deterioration of the Lighthouse Gate Road as captured in August 2023 (more photos here). The road degraded substantially during the winter storms last year which resulted in a safety precaution closure to all vehicle traffic.

Artist Darren Evans has a special affinity for lighthouses, capturing them in murals that can be seen in neighboring Port Orford. He donated numerous works to the "Save Our Lighthouse" cause.

It was a weekly ritual to see CBHS Staff and Volunteers hauling inventory up the lighthouse gate road. We all appreciated the exercise.

Multum In Parvo

Multum In Parvo

Ada, the lighthouse mascot, donated her pug carrier to the cause to help haul inventory and other necessities weekly out to the Cape Blanco Lighthouse. "Multum In Parvo" is latin for "much in little" and is considered the slogan of the pug breed. We think it is fitting for our lighthouse!

In July, our beloved lighthouse had a motor wear out and the lens had to be shrouded for protection until new parts arrived. We are grateful to the US Coast Guard for their prompt assistance in this matter to keep the Cape Blanco Lighthouse shining!
