rdcHQ Infrastructure <3

Greetings from The All New #rdcHQ! We’re deep in the mines configuring gadgets and gizmos for our new media lab and the downstairs gallery at Point.B Studio. We’re trying out two different kinds of bulbs — currently the Phillips Hue and TCPi Connected — to see if we can build a hybrid solution for our space. We have quite a few bulbs to replace, and our goal is to phase out all incandescents and compact flourescents until we are 100% LED. The Philips Hue is our favorite because it is dimmable AND you can change color (we <3 color at #rdcHQ).

However, the TCPi Connected certainly has its benefits. Although the TCPi is white dimmable only, it is brighter at 800 lumens (Phillips Hue is rated 600 lumens, with a slightly brighter BR30 downlight version at 630 lumens for beaming directional light which is desirable in a gallery space). In addition, The Phillips Hue bridge can support up to 50 bulbs, while the TCPi Connected gateway supports up to 250(!). The TCPi bulb is also more affordable at about a third of the price of a single Hue (although did we mention that the Hue bulbs are color … we <3 color at #rdcHQ! ).

#rdcHQ infrastructure in progress. Our first milestone is the Spring art show at Point.B, “interazione”

It will take a bit of time and testing to do everything we want to do, and we’ll report our findings here … Stay tuned!

Terry Mock checks in on the redwood clone.

Greetings! It was great to hear from our friends at Archangel Ancient Tree Archive who recently visited Port Orford, Oregon, to check on the Barrett Stump Redwood Clone that was planted at Pacific High School last year in celebration of Earth Day. We are pleased to report that the clone is doing well, and that the crew at Archangel have more epic video plans in the works! The original video of the 2013 Earth Day event was created by Nathan Malamud of The Beginning of the Sustainable World (and #rdcHQ) fame. You can view the Earth Day video by clicking on the image below.

Meanwhile, at “The All New #rdcHQ” … The Cobwebs Crew began setting up their new web server at the last meetup. We learned a little bit about what an IP address is and what it does and logged into our server for the very first time!

Stay Tuned! … :-)

rdcHQ Winter Season 2014

Greetings! We’re in Winter Hibernation mode: planning, dreaming up new projects and configuring our media lab for the 2014 Season. As is customary at #rdcHQ, even in the off-season something is always brewing behind-the-scenes. :-)

Cobwebs – The Movie – Part Two

Work on “Cobwebs – The Movie” has begun after a series of planning sessions by the Crew focusing on script revisions for Part Two and new character development to support the storyline. This month, “Chapter 4 – Strange Awakenings” is ready for animation. The Crew is mapping out their own production schedule, with the release of Part Two tentatively scheduled for the Spring and the second release (and full web rollout) scheduled for Fall 2014 just in time for the Oregon Coast Film Festival.

The All New #rdcHQ Media Lab

The Media Lab at The All New rdcHQ is coming along nicely with upgrades to the network and infrastructure. We’d like to thank RDC Alumni Jasper Shumaker-Pruitt for pitching in to help us troubleshoot and upgrade our production environment with modern technologies that will serve our needs now and well into the future. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to make progress and rev our sites and projects to the next level. We’ll have more announcements about what’s in store for 2014 in the months ahead.

All New #rdcHQ Update 2

Holiday Greetings from The All New #rdcHQ!
We received an interesting photograph of the area taken around 1895 before the future All New #rdcHQ was even constructed (according to our research, the building was first built circa 1898). The clearing in the foreground of the photograph below shows the building site – look for the two tents or check out this large image for a better view. We are currently documenting the history of the 351 building, so if anyone out there has any stories, facts or photos, please send them along!

The two tents in this image are located where Highway 101 is today. Compare to this 1925 photo.

We’ll be having a sneak peek of the new digs, including Point.B Studio’s freshly remodeled street level gallery, during the holiday art walk in Port Orford, OR, on December 14 … Watch this space for details!
