Cobwebs 3D Extra Credit!

This Just In! In Cobwebs Open Lab this weekend, Quince N. did an outstanding job of creating a ray-traced glass goblet, which is not an easy thing to get right the first time, but he got it perfect. (HT: Jerry McManus)

Milemarker 46: Create A Perfect Ray-Traced Goblet!

AMAZING WORK! Hats off to Quince, Jerry and The Cobwebs Crew!

Cobwebs Countdown 3-2-1

The amazing Cobwebs Crew is in the homestretch preparing for their site launch! This week, the Crew registered two new domain names for their website – one for the site itself and another for the development of the movie. The Sandbox will be a bit unstable while we move everything to its permanent home on the World Wide Web. We’ll reveal our new location at The Rural Design Collective Launch Party!

Milemarker 45: Create A Cobwebs Character in 3D!

All of this shuffling about and relocating behind-the-scenes doesn’t slow down our animators one bit! Mentor Jerry McManus, Nathan Malamud and Quince N. continue to dazzle and amaze with their creative antics in the Blender Basics Track. Below is a sneak peek of Stemlock 2.0 created entirely in 3D!

Nathan Malamud created this groovy movie that gives a view inside of his new Stemlock creation. Please be patient while the video loads – we had to upload it as a Quicktime movie to allow the fine mesh lines of the 3D wireframe to render properly.

You can view the movie at full size here … [25MB QT Download] … Enjoy! :-)

Standards Sprint Update!

Greetings from #rdcHQ! We are pleased to report that in our Codes of the World track we have completed the first of our Standards Sprints for the British Standard! We have successfully reverse-engineered the graphics for two versions of BS 8300 – the first published in 2001 and the second in 2009. The challenge for our team was to reproduce the graphics for both versions faithfully, including any modifications to the graphic that may have resulted due to revisions of the standard. An example of two such graphics are below.

Pull the center green handle to the left and right to see the difference —

You can also compare the scalable vector graphics (SVG) created by the Rural Design Collective to the low quality source scans (JPG) in the public repository. We have a few more standards we are in full sprint mode on with the goal to complete them by the end of our program. We’ll keep you up to date on our progress here!

Cobwebs Website Magic !!!

Hola! As if the amazing achievements on our animated movie and in our 3D modeling track weren’t enough, the website crew has been doing wondrous things in the Cobwebs Sandbox.

Milemarker 41: Work with Web Technologies

Gabby McCutcheon and Evelyn Jennings have been bringing the website to life using technologies such as HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), CSS (Cascading StyleSheets), JavaScript and embeddable web fonts (we’re using the Google variety).

The site is taking on a life of its own thanks to the visual talents of these two artists!

The Cobwebs Crew will be tightening up the design and beta-testing the site in the weeks ahead! We’ll also be posting our bouncing spider JavaScript tutorial to our site (be warned: the spider is currently BUGGY :-) and the entire site is under construction). Right now, everyone is busy getting ready for the Rural Design Collective Launch Party (Labor Day Weekend) and the Oregon Coast Film Festival (in October) so tutorials, handouts and more will be posted to our site post-program.

Milemarker 42: Create An Audio Loop

Customization of our game for the site continues! Not only do we have a really cool new splash screen but we also have our own custom audio loop thanks to the musical stylings of Evelyn Jennings. Game customization by Albert Self III.

NOTE: Cobwebs Capman may stall on load in FireFox on a Mac … we’re working on it!

Enjoy! :-)
